Things from the Desk of the Editor-in-Chief

  1. CADET: THE MAGAZINE

LAST CALL FOR VOL III you can still get your hands on a copy of VOL III - Independents as part of your annual subscription. But we are down to our last 15 copies of the magazine. VOL III is a packed 112-pages of articles, essays, photos, illustrations that present USMA in a modern, yet traditional way. We have subscribers from USMA 1955 to USMA 2024!!! GET IT BEFORE ITS GONE

  2. NEW USMA GIG POSTER

GAS! GAS! GAS! we’re designing gig posters for marquee USMA events - those timeless traditions and rites of passage - during the 47-month process. Next up is everybody’s favorite HOUSE OF TEARS - the CS Gas Chamber.

  3. THE DESIGN OF THINGS

THE DESIGN OF APPRECIATION lately I have found “attention” to be a great form of appreciation. These past few weeks I have focused a lot on my own attention…and paying attention to what you pay attention to is no easy task. One recommendation for you…every once in a while look up and look down. I spent 5 days up at West Point recently and paid attention to the brick patterns (they are quite varied) and made it a point to look up as much as I could. I’m not going to spoil it for you. You have to go check it out yourself.

  4. FOR EVERY HEART IN GRAY

AOG’s GRAD INSIDER TOUR above I talked about appreciation and attention. Taking the AOG GRAD INSIDER TOUR helped me pay attention to USMA things and appreciate West Point, AOG and my relation to the heritage and tradition in a fabulous and surprising way. I have a blog post in progress that will delve into AOG’s Grad Insider Tour a little further. In the meantime, schedule your tour - I highly recommend it.

  5. FOR YOUR EYEBALLS

YOU WILL WIN if you enjoy getting yourself fired-up WATCH THIS WONDERFUL USMA VIDEO. We viewed it along with the Army Football variation at the annual Army Football Golf Outing.

  6. WHAT I AM READING

TO THE COLORS is a book of West Point poetry from USMA 1967 graduates Dennis Coates and Mark Hamilton. This book is actually quite a rare find. I uncovered a copy at the West Point Spouses Gift Shop I had the chance to meet and talk with Mark at our annual Army Football Golf Weekend.

BLEED A WHILE is a crash course on the art of bleeding, getting back up and “fighting some more”. Written by USMA 2015 grad, former Army Football player, and current Director of Player Development for Army Football, Lawrence Scott. Get yours here. I also met and talked with Lawrence at the Army Football Golf Outing.

  7. THEY DID IT! THAT’S AWESOME…WAIT, WHO’S THEY?

CITIZEN SKYLAND is the next graphic novel from Excavation Pictures. And because of the help of the West Point community they raised $48,000 to create a West Point-inspired adventure.

  8. RADIO GA GA

90.7 WFUV how many times have you arrived at West Point and been clamoring for a solid radio station to listen to? Well, a few weeks back on my week-long stay at West Point, I discovered 90.7 WFUV for the first time. It’s a great little radio station with a nod towards some underplayed or forgotten gems - a true platform for music discovery. Sunday afternoon’s they have a very nice Woody’s Children radio show with live in-studio performances. It’s not a top-40 or typical classic rock station, so it may not be for you…but if it is please check them out.

  9. West Point 100: CREATORS

DAN LANDAU is an illustrator. He creates custom cadet portraits over maps of West Point. His meticulous attention to detail will make you say, “wait…what! amazing” Follow him on Instagram and on Facebook

  10. PODCAST FROM THE WEEK

THE ANTROPROCENE REVIEWED if you’ve ever wondered why Haley’s Comet, the Bonneville salt flats and the Yips haven’t been rated on a 5-star scale, YOU’RE IN LUCK - CHECK OUT THE ANTHROPOCENE REVIEWED. This is my new favorite podcast and a masterful example of creative non-fiction.

HERO PROPS imaginary worlds is a podcast that looks at how and why we suspend our disbelief and this episode gets into the nitty-gritty of movie props. My major takeaway - when you are looking at any sort of artifact whether a movie prop or collectible there are three stories…1) It’s Origin - How it came to be? 2) How it was used? 3) How the collector acquired it? And it was these three ideas that helped me navigate the West Point Museum with a renewed perspective. So many stories.
