Things from the Desk of the Editor-in-Chief

  1. OUR WILDLY POPULAR PENNANTS AND BANNER ARE COMING BACK

Loyal readers - upgrade your work-from-home situation - RESERVE ONE OF THESE BEAUTIES NOW. They will sell-out. FAST. So get on board and snag yourself one (or all three). Whether its a reminder of GEN McArthur’s ethos with our NO SUBSTITUTE CAMP FLAG or our SING SECOND PENNANT or our ROCK THE BLACK GOLD PENNANT you can’t go wrong.

  2. DRAFTED & THE SEEDS OF THE FIELDS OF FRIENDLY STRIFE

What is Mr. Irrelevant? Who is Mr. Irrelevant? In spring of 1997 MR. IRRELEVANT was Army Football’s Ronnie McAda. SPOILER: It was Ronnie McAda’s photo in Sports Illustrated that put Army Football on my radar.

This year Army Football had high hopes of making a splash during the annual NFL Draft. While no Army Football players were drafted, COLE CHRISTIANSEN, ELI RILEY and CONNOR SLOMKA were immediately signed as undrafted free-agents. (by the Chargers, Eagles and Jaguars, respectively) following the 7 rounds (the most since 1996) giving them the opportunity not only to continuing athletic pursuits at the highest level but also the unique ability to bring awareness of West Point to one of the world’s biggest megaphone - the NFL.

  3. THE ART OF…

GRADUATION PHOTOS - this week’s news of USMA graduation reminded me of THIS PHOTO I TOOK from USMA 2009’s graduation - the result…a moment of wonder and reverie. You can check out the USMA 2009 GALLERY HERE

MICHIE STADIUM - Speaking of reverie check out THIS RARE 1930’s COLOR PHOTO OF MICHIE STADIUM from SONS OF SLUM AND GRAVY

    TURNING TWO
    - Baseball may be on hiatus. Fortunately, the game is so vast and wonderful that looking back uncovers some amazing things. Like this truly unbelievable image: THE ART OF THE DOUBLE PLAY

Know a cadet or grad making art? LET US KNOW

  4. CADET COMPANY - MASCOT HISTORIES

The HISTORY OF C-2 is pretty interesting. We’re on a mission to track down the history of all 36 Cadet Companies and we need your help. Over the decades they’ve changed quite a bit…Can you help us track down the history of your cadet company? SEND US AN EMAIL.

  5. SOSH RUN 2008

This year’s virtual SOSH run was truly one-of-kind. But check out THESE RIDICULOUS IMAGES from the 2008 iteration.

  6. THE ART OF COOL

Last week we put out a poll/query on INSTAGRAM & FACEBOOK. We wanted to know your thoughts on a great debate: The Gray (purple) Jacket or the current Black Jacket. Which was objectively better? Then as the week progressed we came across THIS PHOTO FROM USMA1969 and that put an end to the debate for good.

  7. LAST CALL FOR - WHAT’S IN YOUR TRUNK?

Take us on the journey of your cadet experience. Pull out your trunk, lay out a few pieces of your story, take a photo (with some nice natural light from a big window, if possible) and share it with us by EMAIL or on FACEBOOK or INSTAGRAM.

We’re crowd-sourcing images and stories for VOL V of CADET magazine coming this summer and we’d love to help tell a little bit of your story (DEADLINE FOR SUBMISSIONS IS APRIL 30th).

  8. CARDS FOR HUMANITY

There was earth shattering activity this week in one of our favorite USMA Facebook groups. MILITARY MARKETPLACE UNIQUE BOUTIQUE A rare pack of West Point Playing cards created an uncanny reaction.

We POSTED A PHOTO OF THE CARDS a while back. We also picked-up a couple more copies of the heavily desired deck. Now that we are in possession of a few more than we need - we may just have to GIVE ONE AWAY OVER ON INSTAGRAM. So Come give us a follow and be on the look-out for upcoming giveaway.

  9. LONG READ OF THE WEEK

HERE’S YOUR LONG READ for the weekend. Spoiler #1 its good. Spoiler #2 its about Ranger School.

  10. CONTRIBUTE TO VOL V

And lastly, we need your help. Actually, VOL V of CADET needs your help. Just like you and your profession, the current state of things has had and will to continue to have an effect on our operation. We are currently operating as close as we can to “business-as-usual” but several of our upcoming photo projects won’t be happening or were postponed until the fall. So, we have some openings for content in VOL V.

Do you want to contribute? Do you have something to say? A photo series or a single photo you think fits in line with our effort to highlight the intersection of West Point culture and art? A poem or some art? Submissions for VOL V are open now until May 15th, 2020. Drop us a note and let’s see if we can collaborate to make VOL V our best effort yet.
