  1. SHOW US WHAT’S IN YOUR TRUNK

Last weekend we had a blast doing the above flat-lay photo. My wife and I took a Saturday afternoon rediscovering the contents of her cadet trunk. Look, I am totally biased and madly in love with her, but I am always in awe when we revisit her USMA experience. Her firstie year she was Patriot League Champion in the 400m Hurdles, Captain of the Track & Field Team, an Honor Grad (receiving her diploma from President Obama) and she even uncovered a range card, company patches and an invite to a spirit dinner from a plebe and on and on and on.

Now were asking all YOU OLD GRADS - to do the same. Take us on the journey of your cadet experience. Pull out your trunk, lay out a few pieces of your story, take a photo (with some nice natural light from a big window, if possible) and share it with us by EMAIL or on FACEBOOK or INSTAGRAM. We’re crowd-sourcing images and stories for VOL V of CADET magazine coming this summer and we’d love to help tell a little bit of your story (DEADLINE FOR SUBMISSIONS IS APRIL 30th).

  2. USMA LIBRARY - BLACK OUT POETRY

Go check out THIS RECENT USMA LIBRARY POST - they're sharing some historical USMA documents to download so you can create your own black-out poem, like the one we did above (AND HERE) we’d love to see what you come up with.

What’s a black-out poem? Its basically art by subtraction.

  3. CADETS ARE Creators

Another week has gone by and another swath of creative talent has emerged from CADETS-AT-HOME. This time around we’re urging you to go check out:

    - this LIGHT-HEARTED AND PLAYFUL ILLUSTRATION BY HANNAH LAMB USMA 2023,
    - D2 DRAGONS’ CPL LEWALK’s colorful illustrations
    - USMA 2021’s RYAN WITTER unique digital collection
    - and B3 Bandits' @SBASSETT26 and @95DEANO with this phenomenal COLLAB ON ON SPOTIFY

    Here’s Last Week’s Highlighted Creators:
    -
Connor Gagne is recreating the Crests of Cadet Companies in a wonderfully hand-drawn manner (ANNNNND donating the proceeds to Feeding America). As of publishing this, he’s about 3/4 of the way to knocking-out all 36 companies and has raised enough money to provide 3,000+ meals.
    - Julia Franzoni is diving back into Adobe Illustrator making art to cope with the fact that the LAX season was cut short. HER ILLUSTRATIONS ARE FILLED WITH HOPE AND JUBILATION.
    -
Emma Roetry has picked up a PAINT BRUSH AND COULD BE MISTAKEN FOR BOB ROSS. Can’t wait to see what she does next…rumor has it, she’s doing Michie Stadium/Lusk Reservoir combo.

Who are we missing? Know a cadet or grad making art? LET US KNOW

  4. West Point STUDENT-ATHLETES ARE SIMPLY DIFFERENT

When your senior season is cut short and your team was undefeated - it sucks. But THIS ARTICLE from Women’s Lacrosse’s Taylor Korpela is wonderful.

  5. JUST TWO OLD GRADS, HANGING OUT, DOING STUFF

April 9th was the 155th anniversary of two particular OLD GRADS HANGING OUT AT APPOMATTOX COURTHOUSE.

  6. SKILLSHARE IS AWESOME

With my new found downtime, I’ve been taking a deep dive into Adobe Illustrator thanks to the wonderful tutorials and in-depth classes on SKILLSHARE. I highly recommend it if you are trying to jump-start, discover or hone a creative skill. They also have a ton of classes on productivity and business know-how. Its like my own Center for Enhanced Performance.

  7. FACES & FACADES

We wrapped-up our Faces & Facades effort on OUR INSTAGRAM FEED did you correctly guess all the building walls?

  8. FOUR VOLUMES OF CADET MAGAZINE FROM A NOTEBOOK PAGE

Have you ever wondered where CADET Magazine originated from? Take a look at THIS FACEBOOK POST that explains a little about when and where the idea for this publication came from.

  9. USMA 2008’s KIM JUNG

In VOL II of CADET Magazine we featured USMA 2008’s Kim Jung. And now she’s setting off on another important adventure - Are you looking for a cause to support? Please consider donating to the MIT E-Vent (Emergency Ventilator) team who have been working days and nights every day to bring a low-cost scalable ventilator reference design that manufacturers across the nation and globally have already used to make hundreds and soon thousands of ventilators. They need your support. https://lnkd.in/eJPiPDb

  10. DOC & GLENN

HERE’S YOUR LONG READ for the weekend. Whether you’re an Army Football historian, a casual Army fan or a newcomer to the exploits of the All-Time-Greats to don the Black & Gray & Gold, this long read will give you some real context on two West Point legends Glenn Davis and Felix “Dod” Blanchard - Mr. Inside and Mr. Outside.

And lastly, we need your help. Actually, VOL V of CADET needs your help. Just like you and your profession, the current state of things has had and will to continue to have an effect on our operation. We are currently operating as close as we can to “business-as-usual” but several of our upcoming photo projects won’t be happening or were postponed until the fall. So, we have some openings for content in VOL V.

Do you want to contribute? Do you have something to say? A photo series or a single photo you think fits in line with our effort to highlight the intersection of West Point culture and art? A poem or some art? Submissions for VOL V are open now until May 15th, 2020. Drop us a note and let’s see if we can collaborate to make VOL V our best effort yet.
